Congenital Heart Disease on the rise

A recent study conducted in Ahmedabad among school going children showed that the number of children suffering from heart-related conditions is rising consistently. 6,342 school children out of the 1.4 crore tested under the 2009-10 health check-up programme had suffered from heart related disorders. 12 among these had also undergone kidney transplant. The figures are constantly increasing since 2006-07 when the numbers were only 3,584. The most common heart disorder affecting these children is a hole in the heart or defect in the valves according to State Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas.
